Samsung has revealed its 2027 Odyssey OLED monitor lineup at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne. The company's monitor experts, Jeremy Demont and Pepe Distra, discussed high refresh rates, 6K gaming, and glasses-free 3D technology in an interview.

Triple-mode screens debut

A new triple-mode feature debuts on the Odyssey OLED G8. This 32-inch 4K tandem QD-OLED panel offers three distinct performance profiles.

ModeResolutionRefresh Rate
Native4K360Hz
Middle1440p520Hz
PerformanceFull HD680Hz

Distra confirmed this triple-mode capability is baked into the panel hardware and cannot be added later via firmware. He was candid about its practical use, questioning whether average buyers would actually use the feature. Distra said Samsung needs to watch how the hardware is used once it reaches the market, with community feedback directly shaping future developments.

The 1100Hz refresh rate ceiling

The Odyssey G6 G60H supports a 1100Hz refresh rate. This 1440p Fast IPS panel runs at 600Hz natively but can drop to HD resolution to unlock the 1100Hz mode.

Distra addressed whether refresh rates can become too high. He framed extreme refresh rates as targeting a small eSports market. The reasoning behind dual- and triple-mode panels, he explained, is about giving performance headroom without forcing all users to run at maximum settings all the time. When asked if the industry would push past 1100Hz, Distra would not commit, stating only that "if we go faster in the future, we'll have to see."

6K gaming and future-proofing

Samsung's 6K gaming monitors serve a future-proofing purpose. Distra explained that high-end PC users can already drive that resolution, while the dual-mode option covers those who cannot.

The new G9 ultrawide also features a dual-mode option: 5120 x 1440 at up to 360Hz, or 'dual HD' at 2560 x 720 for 720Hz. Distra noted that 6K gaming screens offer higher refresh rates than professional screens with the same resolution, which are typically limited to 60Hz. This benefits both productivity responsiveness and gaming performance.

Both experts noted people buy monitors for multiple purposes. A 6K gaming screen serves professionals needing high-resolution detail for creative work and gamers with systems powerful enough for 5K or 6K gaming, assuming game support.

Glasses-free 3D's content challenge

Samsung has maintained its commitment to glasses-free 3D technology longer than most competitors. At CES, the company showed a 6K, 32-inch glasses-free 3D panel.

Distra framed the previous failure of 3D technology as a content problem rather than a hardware problem. He said people were "mind-blown by the product capability, but it's the content" that lagged. Samsung's product teams have shifted focus toward securing AAA game support instead of pushing panel technology further. This includes newly announced Cyberpunk 2077 3D compatibility.

Demont compared the situation to Samsung's early push into 4K resolution when broadcasters lacked programming. "We can't just do it by ourselves, we need the whole industry behind it," he said. He sees HDR10+ gaming following a similar adoption curve to HDR10+ on TV, where streaming services moved quickly once support became easy. Samsung confirms the new Call of Duty supports HDR10+ gaming, with more than 20 games expected to carry the standard by the first half of 2027.

OLED burn-in improvements

Samsung has introduced a new fifth-generation QD-OLED panel featuring Penta Tandem technology and an RGB stripe sub-pixel layout. This promises greater power efficiency, longevity, and sharper text.

Both Demont and Distra stated that burn-in is now virtually a non-issue compared to when OLED gaming monitors were first introduced. Demont noted that improvements increasing product lifecycle or durability benefit the end customer, especially since high-end monitors represent significant purchases.

**Professional feedback and market convergence**

Distra confirmed Samsung takes direct input from eSports professionals, citing an ongoing relationship with a multiple-time League of Legends world champion in Korea. Demont explained Samsung's strategy introduces new technology at the top of the range first before cascading it downward over time.

Demont noted Samsung is folding its monitor team into the same visual display division as TV in the UK due to product convergence. Some desktop monitors now match TV sizes, while people use TVs as monitors. This decision aims to capture market overlap, offering customers equally rich specifications in either product category with consistent features. For instance, some smaller OLED TVs boast a 165Hz refresh rate, while specific gaming monitor variants come with the Tizen OS smart TV operating system.
