Currys customers left without working

Two Currys Ireland customers, Joanne and Jean, report being left for months without functional major kitchen appliances due to faulty goods and poor

Two Currys Ireland customers, Joanne and Jean, report being left for months without functional major kitchen appliances...

A Currys Ireland customer was left without a working fridge-freezer for over two months after a new unit failed. Joanne says the retailer subjected her to false accusations and administrative chaos before closing her case automatically.

Joanne had a Beko American-style fridge-freezer delivered on July 3. Thirteen days later, on July 16, she logged a formal complaint. The main fridge section failed to cool while the freezer iced up, ruining all her food.

With no resolution from Currys by August 4, Joanne independently organised an engineer visit via the manufacturer's guarantee. The authorised engineer confirmed the unit was entirely faulty and issued an official uplift number, which was handed to Currys.

Customer service failures

A week later, a Currys customer service agent emailed Joanne to falsely claim the item was outside their returns policy. During phone calls, a representative explicitly accused her of lying about having previously contacted them. On August 23, she received an email addressed to someone named Stella about collecting a cooker.

On September 10, after what she describes as complete radio silence, Joanne checked the Currys website and found her exact model listed as 'No Longer Available'. She then received an automated email closing her case under the false claim it was resolved.

Joanne says she is at her wits' end. She has an official engineer's report for a major defect reported within her statutory rights. Currys has left her indefinitely without a fridge-freezer, offering no resolution while stock is unavailable and locking her out of her case file. Her original complaint was logged with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

A second faulty appliance case

Another customer, Jean, reported problems with a Hisense double oven bought from Currys on November 21, 2025, along with an €80 Currys insurance care package. The electric oven was delivered in December, but Jean later noticed excessive noise and condensation.

A friend pointed out this was not normal. Jean reported the issue on June 13 and was given a number to call on June 21. She eventually called on August 18. Repair personnel asked for videos and pictures and said someone would contact her within 24-48 hours. Nobody did.

After repeated emails and calls yielded no engineer visit, Jean went to the Blanchardstown Currys store on September 9. A helpful staff member called Hisense on her behalf. An update from Hisense stated they were having issues contacting their engineer and were working to rectify it.

Jean responded that the situation was urgent, as excessive condensation was dripping down her kitchen cabinet and under the oven, threatening her newly fitted kitchen. She received no response. On September 10, she requested a refund and collection, but got no reply.

The resolution attempt

Jean returned to the Blanchardstown store on September 15. The staff member could not contact Hisense, so Currys decided she should be refunded for the oven. Jean picked a different AEG oven priced at €549.99. As she had bought the Hisense in November for €429.99, she needed to pay an extra €120, plus another €80 for product insurance.

The staff member organised free delivery, installation, and removal of the faulty Hisense oven. The AEG oven was not in stock, so Jean must return on September 25 with her receipt to arrange a delivery date.

After the Irish Times contacted Currys about Jean's story, she heard from Currys in the UK. They asked if the problem had been resolved. Jean explained what the Blanchardstown staff had done. The UK representative said, as a goodwill gesture, their finance department would call to arrange a refund for the €120 she paid for the replacement. He also expressed his apologies.
